Car battery for the Maruti Suzuki Swift: correct AH, terminal layout and replacement guide
A Maruti Suzuki Swift that cranks slowly on the first turn of the morning is telling you something, and it is rarely the starter motor. Most petrol and diesel cars in this segment leave the factory with a battery in the 35AH class, and most of them need replacing between the third and fifth year.
Getting the size right
Three numbers have to match, and only one of them is AH:
- Capacity (AH): the Maruti Suzuki Swift typically runs around 35AH. Going one step up is usually safe; going down leaves you stranded on a cold morning.
- Terminal side (L or R): the single most common ordering mistake. Stand facing the battery from the front of the car with the terminals nearest you — if positive is on the left it is an L, on the right an R. The cables will not stretch to the wrong side.
- CCA (cold cranking amps): higher is better for a diesel or any car with a big electrical load. Do not drop below the figure on the battery you are removing.
Signs it is nearly finished
- The engine cranks noticeably slower after the car has stood overnight.
- Headlights dim at idle and brighten when you rev.
- The battery warning lamp flickers on rough roads — usually a loose terminal, sometimes an internal fault.
- The car starts fine daily but refuses after two days parked.
- Visible white or blue crust on the terminals, or a swollen case.
Sealed maintenance-free, or the old topping-up kind?
Almost every Maruti Suzuki Swift on the road today should be on a sealed maintenance-free unit. There is no water to top up, no acid fumes in the engine bay, and the self-discharge rate is low enough that the car survives a fortnight parked at the airport. The older low-maintenance type is cheaper up front and worth it only if the car is used daily and you will genuinely check the levels.
At the time of fitment
- Hand over the old battery — its scrap value is adjusted against the bill, and disposing of it yourself is both illegal and pointless.
- Watch the terminals get cleaned and greased. Corrosion is the cause of half the 'dead battery' calls we attend.
- Confirm the clamp is tight. A battery that vibrates loose in its tray sheds plate material and dies early.
- Note the date sticker and keep the invoice — no warranty claim succeeds without it.
